APRIL VOKEY
Fly fishing needs April Vokey. Hers is a unique voice that expands both the boundaries and the relevance of the sport. What makes her so recognizable seems obvious at first. She is young. She is beautiful. She is always photographed holding huge chromers in the picturesque rivers of her native British Columbia. And she is, well, a she. But what gives her so much clout in the industry is the fact that she is all of these things in addition to being an exceptional angler who reminds us of the beauty and elegance of fly fishing without ever making it an issue of gender.
She was born with an unexplainable passion for fishing.
As a young girl she coaxed her father into going fishing and by the age of sixteen, when she was old enough to drive, she was devoting all of her free time to her local rivers. In true B.C. fashion, she is most passionate about Spey casting to wild steelhead and tying Salmon/Steelhead flies for her home waters.
April is as passionate about protecting the waters she fishes as she is about fishing them, and enjoys teaching others how to fish as much as she loves fishing herself. She has made it her mission to encourage and introduce aspiring anglers to the sport, in hopes that it will bring them as much pleasure as it has brought her. She takes pride in being an eternal student of fly-fishing.
In 2007 she founded B.C. based guiding operation, Fly Gal Ventures (www.flygal.ca), where she presently guides and instructs anglers on some of B.C.’s best steelhead destinations. April is a Federation of Fly Fishers Certified Casting Instructor and fly-fishing columnist; she serves as Canadian field editor for Chasing Silver magazine and her works and photos can also be found in Fly Fusion, Salmon Trout Steelheader (STS), Field and Stream, Canadian Fly Fisher, Fly Fisherman Magazine, Flyfishing and Tying journal and several other international magazines. She is also a lead angler for Fly Max Films where she travels across the world, fly-fishing for every species of fish imaginable.
