MIKEY WEIR
Mikey Wier is a reminder that there is a younger generation of passionate and talented anglers that don’t quite fit the mold of the stereotypical fly fisherman. Without compromising any level of skill or love for the craft, Mikey has managed to fuse the seemingly juxtaposed cultures of fly fishing and the surf/skate industry through his lifestyle, expeditions, and films.
His interest in fish started at an early age, fishing with his dad around his home in the Sierra foothills of Amador County, and his grandfather on California’s coast. His career as a fishing guide began when he went fishing with a friend in college. Upon hearing that he was a fishing guide, Mikey asked “A what?” When his friend explained to him what a fishing guide does Mikey inquired, “People pay you for that?!?” Since then, Mikey has developed into an excellent guide and an innovative filmmaker.
Mikey’s interests are as diverse as the landscape of his native northern California where surf, trout, whitewater, powder and mountains all have their season. Mikey hasn’t left much on the table as far as these interests go, snowboarding professionally for years, guiding fishing trips and tying flies professionally, and now producing films that capture the breadth of motor-free adventure sports. His film production company, Burl Productions, offers cutting edge fly fishing films including Soulfish 1 & 2, Fish Eye, and The Trout Bum Diaries, and a brand new, multi-sport adventure movie titled California Green Rush.
With Mikey you get the sense that it doesn’t matter what kind of rod, oar, or paddle you put in his hand, or what you strapped to his feet, or whether you dropped him off on a lake, in the snow or on a river; he would be comfortable and happy, and you’d be impressed.
